What is a Knee Brace?
Knee braces have come a long way since their bulky rigid predecessors were the industry norm. Most modern day knee braces are beautifully constructed, extremely effective, and low-profile enough to fit under most clothing. Knee braces are designed to achieve one or more of the following goals:
-
Enhance performance
-
Prevent injury
-
Facilitate recovery from injury
-
Reduce pain and swelling
Patients may require a knee brace for a variety of reasons. Knee brace selection and design depend upon each patient’s condition, anatomy, and functional goals. NEOPS will work with you and your team to ensure you receive a knee brace that maximizes your performance and minimizes your pain and risk of injury. Whether you participate in competitive or recreational sports or simply enjoy being outdoors, a knee brace may be what you need to take it to the next level.
Types of Knee Braces
There are three main types of knee braces:
-
Osteoarthritis knee braces, or OA braces, are designed to reduce pain and prevent the advancement of osteoarthritis. OA braces are often prescribed to prevent or delay knee replacement surgery. To learn more about OA braces click here to visit our OA Bracing Page.
-
Sports knee braces, or functional knee braces, are designed for sports and movement-based activities. Functional knee braces are often prescribed after an injury or surgery to protect the knee and optimize performance.
-
Post-operative knee braces are provided after knee surgery. These braces are used to control range-of-motion as patients recover from surgery.
Sports Knee Bracing
Sports knee braces, also known as functional knee braces, are ideal for sports and movement-based activities. These braces are designed to stabilize, support, and protect the knee. Functional knee braces may be prescribed for a variety of conditions including injuries relating to:
-
ACL
-
PCL
-
Meniscus
-
Tendinitis
-
Patella
How Will a Knee Brace Help?
Sports bracing is extremely effective in protecting the knee and allowing patients to resume their activities of daily living. For you, this may mean completing household chores, shopping, playing with your grandchildren, or higher impact activities such as sports and traveling. Treating knee injuries involves the coordinated care of a team of medical experts, and NEOPS is proud to partner with specialists in the fields of orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, manufacturing, and 3D printing. NEOPS will work with you and your team to ensure you receive a knee brace that maximizes your performance and minimizes your pain and risk of injury.
In general, there are three main categories of functional knee braces that are distinguished by the level of protection they provide to the knee. The level of protection you require will depend on your functional goals and severity of your condition: mild, moderate, or severe.
Severity of Condition
MILD
For patients with mild conditions and at a low risk of injury, a lightweight, compression knee brace is ideal. These braces are perfect for everyday use and for high-activity sports like basketball and tennis. They are effective at reducing pain and swelling and provide a sense of warmth and comfort around the knee.
MODERATE
For patients with moderate conditions requiring more protection, a knee brace with upright hinges and/or corrective strapping may be prescribed. Like compression braces, these knee braces are soft and lightweight and are designed for individuals who are highly active but not necessarily participating in contact sports and high-impact activities. These knee braces are perfect for weekend warriors and individuals who are on their feet everyday professionally and/or recreationally.
SEVERE
For patients with severe conditions, those at a high risk of injury, and those participating in high-impact or contact sports, a knee brace with a rigid frame and strapping is required. These braces are solid but low-profile and lightweight. Depending upon each patient’s condition, anatomy, and functional goals there are a variety of rigid, functional knee braces available. Unlike most knee bracing providers who tend to only provide one type of rigid knee brace, NEOPS specializes in several rigid knee brace designs.
